I have grown up watching David Dhawan’s movies. Regardless of the outcomes at the box-office, his movies guarantee one thing, and one thing only, which is entertainment. His last directorial venture CHASHME BADDOOR, was entertaining and was a success at the box-office. The question on everyone’s mind is whether MAIN TERA HERO, which is the remake of the Telegu super-hit KANDIREEGA, will also be equally entertaining…
Well, let’s find out!
The film is about mischievous Sreenath Prasad aka ‘Seenu’ who drops out from his college in Ooty, and travels to Bangalore in order to continue with his education. There he meets and falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D’Cruz) who is forced to marry Angad (Arunoday Singh), a police officer cum goon. As Sunaina and Seenu become close, Sunaina gets kidnapped… But why? And what or who for? Watch MAIN TERA HERO to find out!
One of the most essential aspect for comedy movies is the dialogues and the gags. Milap Zaveri, penned the dialogues for this film and has hit the bullseye because the punches are simple, original yet hilarious. Luckily, there are not many double entendres in the movie, which allows MAIN TERA HERO to be a wholesome, family friendly entertainer.
Now onto the director, David Dhawan. Whether it’s RAJA BABU, HERO NO.1 or even PARTNER, there is always that particular character which the audience remembers after the film is over. I felt that Anupam Kher’s character, Vikrant was one of the funniest, as the things he said echoed, regardless of the situation in the film. There are more characters in the film which are also memorable, all thanks to the comedy king, David Dhawan. In fact, his direction was so consistent, that at one point it felt like I was watching one of his comedy flicks in the 90s. Great job sir!
As well as the dialogues and the direction, I also feel that the soundtrack is also an important aspect to an entertaining comedy movie. Composer duo Sajid-Wajid create foot-tapping and unforgettable songs. The tracks Palat- Tera Hero Idhar Hai, Galat Baat Hai and Besharmi Ki Height are my favourite and it was a visual treat when I watched the trio Varun, Ileana and Nargis dancing to the choreography by Bosco-Caesar and Ganesh Acharya to their respective songs. So if anything, MAIN TERA HERO guarantees some delightful tunes which you will hymn after the film!
Let’s move onto the performances. Firstly, bearing in mind that MAIN TERA HERO is Varun Dhawan’s second movie after STUDENT OF THE YEAR, he delivers an enthusiastic and energetic performance as the hero. In fact, his performance reminds one of Govinda from various David Dhawan movies and Salman Khan from JUDWAA. Varun exhibits more improvement as an actor since his last performance and has charisma and confidence as required from a super star.
Being exposed to the comedy/masala genre before, from PHATA POSTER NIKLA HERO, Ileana D’Cruz, essays the role of Sunaina well. Her performance in this movie reaffirms that she is the next Bollywood comedy queen. As a matter of fact, she reminds one of the young Karisma Kapoor, from various comedy movies. Ileana can emote, (as we have seen in BARFI!) dance and make you laugh. She is a versatile actress! The co-actress Nargis Fakhri portrays the role of the rich belle, Ayesha. This character contrasts from the ones in the MADRAS CAFE and ROCKSTAR. Moreover, Nargis has dubbed in her own voice for the first time in Hindi, and does well. I believe that once her Hindi has improved even more, she will become even more of a highly successful actress! Arunoday Singh plays Angad, the antagonist of the film. In the past we have seen him essay dark and gloomy roles like the ones in JISM 2 and AISHA. However, in this movie Arunoday showcases his comic side, and does well in doing so.
In addition to the main cast, the film is backed up by superb performances from the supporting cast. Rajpal Yadav as Angad’s protege Peter, is first-rate. His comic timing is excellent. Anupam Kher as Vikrant (Ayesha’s father) is brilliant as always. Saurabh Shukla as Balli (Vikrant’s partner) is hilarious. Evelyn Sharma as Veronica does well in parts. The pleasant surprise in this film was Shakti Kapoor who essayed the role of Johnny. It was such a delight and pleasure watching him in a David Dhawan movie after a hiatus.
Overall, David Dhawan’s MAIN TERA HERO is a wholesome hilarious entertainer. It is worth a watch for the leading trio, who deliver some good performances, and definitely worth a watch for the movie’s enjoyable soundtrack. So Palat! (turn around) because your ‘Hero’, Varun Dhawan, is here!
