Sundance London: Chinese-American Film ‘The Farewell’ Wins Audience Favourite Award

Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced tonight that the 2019 Sundance Film Festival: London’s Audience Favourite Award was presented to The Farewell directed by Lulu Wang. 

A headstrong Chinese-American woman returns to China when her beloved grandmother is given a terminal diagnosis.

Billi (Awkwafina) struggles with her family’s decision to keep Nai Nai (Shuzhen Zhao) in the dark about her illness as they all stage an impromptu wedding to see her one last time.

The film had its European premiere at Sundance Film Festival: London following its World Premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, U.S.A.

Festivalgoers voted in the thousands for their favourite films across the four-day event at Picturehouse Central for this Audience Favourite Award.

The Farewell will premiere in Los Angeles at Sundance Institute’s annual benefit, taking place Wednesday, 26 June.

The Sundance Film Festival: London took place from 30 May – 2 June at Picturehouse Central.

It presented 12 feature films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, U.S.A, alongside two short film programmes and four special events.

The festival opened with the UK gala of Late Night (dir. Nisha Ganatra), written by and starring Mindy Kaling alongside Emma Thompson.

The festival closed on Sunday 2 June with the UK premiere of Penny Lane’s Hail Satan?
