The year 2020 has really braced us to expect the unexpected. From the definition of normality to the way we as humans function, the coronavirus pandemic has changed everything.
It has, of course, impacted several industries one of which has been the film and entertainment industry.
With several releases releasing on the OTT platforms, our appetite and interest in cinema have changed significantly.
Despite living in uncertain times, Filme Shilmy presents a list of Non-Hindi and Hindi films we can look forward to in the near future!

83
Kabir Khan’s 83 sports drama is set to evoke the nostalgia of the 1983 world cup triumph for all the cricket fans out there. revolves around the life of the winning captain Kapil Dev and the Indian cricket team.
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will be essaying the roles of Kapil Dev and his wife Romi “Bhatia” Dev. Other key members of the team are played by Tahir Raj Bhasin (Sunil Gavaskar), Harrdy Sandhu (Madan Lal), Saqib Saleem (Mohinder Amarnath), Jiiva (Krishnamachari Srikanth), Ammy Virk (Balwinder Sandhu), Sahil Khattar (Syed Kirmani) and Chirag Patil (Sandeep Patil).
The cricket team cast of 83 was also trained by former cricket players to cover all the natural aspects from that momentous tournament.
Interestingly, it also marks the second production of Deepika. It was earlier set to release in April 2020 but postponed due to Coronavirus.
Maidaan
Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan, by a film that celebrates the biggest sport in the world – Football, has got a new release date.
The Zee Studios’ production, which is a story of change and self-belief, will release the next Dussehra on 15th October 2021.
Inspired from an incredible true story, it will showcase the journey of one of the finest coaches that emerged from India, the one who put India on the global map.
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma of Badhaai Ho fame, Maidaan also stars National award-winning actress Priyamani, Gajraj Rao who created magic with Badhaai Ho and the well-known Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh.
Jersey
Despite the shoot being interrupted due to the Coronavirus outbreak by Team Jersey, thankfully they managed to wrap up amidst the pandemic.
A remake of the 2019 Telugu blockbuster of the same name, it is about a talented but failed cricketer, decides to return to cricket in his late thirties, driven by the desire to represent the Indian cricket team and fulfil his son’s wish for a jersey as a gift.
Gowtam Tinnanauri, who helmed the 2019 original starring Nani, has also directed the Hindi version and stars Shahid Kapoor in the main lead.
The film also stars veteran actor Pankaj Kapur and Mrunal Thakur is being presented by Allu Aravind, produced by Aman Gill, Dil Raju and S Naga Vamsi.
Gangubai Khathiawadi
Gangubai Kathiawadi could be Bhansali’s grittiest movie yet and marks Alia Bhatt’s first collaboration with the visionary filmmaker.
Kathiawadi’s life has been chronicled in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, penned by best-selling novelist and retired investigative reporter S Hussain Zaidi.
Gangubai was multi-faceted: Indian criminal, don, sex worker, businesswoman and a controversial figure from Kathiawar, India.
She operated a sex racket in the Hera Mandi red light district and emerged as a very influential figure in Mumbai through the 60s.
Prabhas 21
While the pandemic has hit several industries – including the arts and entertainment fields. But new film announcements have built up a lot of anticipation.
As such, Prabhas has teamed up with noted filmmaker Nag Ashwin for their upcoming film tentatively titled, Prabhas 21.
Backed by Vyjayanthi Movies, the much-talked-about project will see Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan alongside Prabhas in the lead roles.
The untitled project is set to go on floors next year and will be released in multiple languages in 2022.
Vikram
Coinciding with Kamal Hassan’s 66th birthday, a teaser of Vikram recently released and it promises to be an action-packed venture, with ample of blood and gore.
It opens with Haasan’s character in a cabin, hiding various kinds of weapons in different places. He then sets up a feast on the dining table and waits for the guests to arrive.
Once the guests, who are seen wearing masks, settle down on the table, Haasan’s character picks up two axes and throws them, possibly at his guests. The teaser ends with a note that says, ‘Once upon a time there lived a ghost named Vikram’.
If reports are to be believed then, rumours are rife that Fahad Fazil could be stepping into the shoes as an antagonist, playing a politician. Sounds exciting, right?
Shakun Batra’s Next
The announcement of Shakun Batra’s next with Dharma Productions’ has been among the most exciting Bollywood casting coups of 2020.
Beginning shoot this year, it unites a fascinating cast of names like Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday, not much is known about the film details, though Deepika shared in an earlier media interview about the following:
“To be honest, you can’t call Shakun’s film ‘light’ either… Although the overall tonality of the film is slightly lighter than my last film, in terms of inner, emotional turmoil my character goes through, it’s quite challenging.
The overall genre of the film is something we haven’t seen much in Indian cinema, it’s called domestic noir.
I don’t think that’s a genre we are very familiar with, but at the same time, the audience is completely ready for it, as we have been exposed to that genre in different ways, whether through Hollywood films or OTT platforms.”
Sardar Udham Singh
Sardar Udham Singh is a biopic based on the revolutionary and brave freedom fighter with the same name, which will be helmed by Gulabo Sitabo‘s Shoojit Sircar.
Vicky Kaushal appears in the lead and titular role. The first look of the actor was unveiled during April 2019 impressed fans. The story revolves around the struggle of Singh, who fights for his country against Britain.
Shaheed Udham Singh was best known for his assassination in London of Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940.
The assassination was done to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O’Dwyer was responsible.
Pathan
The reported Pathan has caught eyeballs across the globe and it is set to unite Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone on celluloid.
It marks SRK’s comeback to the big screen after a lengthy break and the movie is set to be bankrolled by Yash Raj Films, with War director Siddharth Anand helming it.
To build up the anticipation, there have also been reports of t Salman Khan will be making an appearance as Tiger aka Avinash Singh Rathore in Pathan – but of course, these are just hearsay news.
Currently, the movie has not been formally announced although it is rumoured to be a Diwali 2021 release and a lot of it is still kept under wraps. Nonetheless, the excitement is immense!
Roohi Afzana
Horror-comedy is an extremely tough genre to master, but the runaway success of Stree has proven that if balanced right, then it can be successfully entertaining.
Helmed by Kaamyaab‘s Hardik Mehta and makers of Stree join forces for Roohi Afzana, which assembles a promising cast consisting of Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma.
Janhvi in a recent interview said that her character in Roohi Afzana is “one of the most exciting, challenging, complicated, physically demanding and emotionally taxing roles that I’ve had the privilege of doing.”
Whilst not much is known, we await the film’s release with bated breaths.
Vaahlam Jaa Ne
Pratik Gandhi’s next Vaahlam Jaa Ne is a Gujarati romantic comedy which is directed by Hardik Gajjar and written by Rahul Patel. It is set to release in March 2021.
The film’s narrative revolves around a couple who are dealing with each other’s past to make a delightful future yet in the process they ruin their present.
Post Pratik’s Bollywood film Raavan Leela, this will be another Gujarati film which is also produced by Hardik Gujjar Films and Backbencher pictures.
It additionally stars Tiku Talsania, Ojas Rawal and Deeksha Joshi.
Ponniyin Selvan
Ponniyin Selvan is Mani Ratnam’s most visionary and ambitious works yet. It spans years and more than 50 characters, with 15 principal roles.
It is based on a historical novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy (of the same name) written in Tamil. In five volumes or about 2210 pages, it tells the story of early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
Promising to be a magnum-opus, it unites a phenomenal cast consisting of Jayam Ravi, Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarathkumar, Mohan Raman and Nizhalgal Ravi are playing pivotal characters in the film.
Academy award-winning AR Rahman is composing the music for the film, Ravi Varman cranks the camera, and Sreekar Prasad is heading the editing department.
Tribhanga – Tedhi Medhi Crazy
Kajol has been on a roll recently, especially at the start of this decade. She has appeared in a period film like Tanhaji, a social-drama short film such as Devi and now her digital debut in Tribhanga.
Set to stream on Netflix, this one has been awaited with bated breaths and is set for a 2021 premiere – though a confirmed date is still yet to be announced.
Going by the synopsis on the official website of the streaming platform, it will be a story revolving when her estranged mother falls into a coma, a self-made single mom grapples with regret and resentment while reflecting on their strained relationship.
Helmed by Renuka Shahane, Ajay Devgn Films is the producer along with Bannijay Asia and Alchemy Productions.
Satwai
Director Dinesh Vijay Shirode’s upcoming Marathi movie, Satwai, has been announced. It is produced by Suraj Zanjage, the film is presented by Tagdog Media in association with Shashthiz Films and Entertainment.
Satwai is a goddess who is believed to write a child’s destiny soon after it is born and the goddess is worshipped in Maharashtra. The title poster for the film has images of someone’s horoscope and some ancient text, indicating that the film will be about the goddess writing someone’s future.
But there is a twist in the tale in the form of the tagline which, translated, reads as “the most beautiful woman in the world.” This brings forth an element of surprise, further suggesting that the film will star a beautiful leading lady.
Whilst the cast of the film is yet to be revealed, Satwai is scheduled to go on the floor in January next year.
Shamshera
Karan Malhotra’s Shamshera is a period-drama film which promises high-octane action and adventure and aims to be a dynamic/unique role for Ranbir Kapoor
This movie will be set in the backdrop of the 18th century, especially focusing on the Dacoit tribe who fought against the British for their rights.
Ranbir is featuring in a double role as Shameshera and his father. Vaani Kapoor is playing dancer Adarshini and the love interest of Shamshera. In preparation for the role, Vaani has also undergone Kathak training to do justice with her role.
Sanjay Dutt plays the main villain role of the film. It was earlier scheduled to release in July 2020.
Laal Singh Chaddha
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Aamir Khan in a successful Bollywood film and we have missed his mark of perfection as an actor.
But thankfully, that wait will soon end with Laal Singh Chadha, directed by Advait Chandan is the remake of Hollywood classic, Forest Gump.
Khan plays the role of a Sardar, events in India’s history unfold through the perspective of Laal Singh Chaddha, a man with low intellect.
The highly-anticipated film also marks the reunion of Kareena Kapoor Khan with Aamir on the big screen, it is scheduled for a Christmas 2021 release.
Overall, these are just 16 of some exciting projects that are coming up. Of course, there are many more to look forward to especially with the following titles: Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Takht, Radhe Shyam, Toofan, Shershaah, Dostana 2, Sooryavanshi, Atrangi Re, China Mobile, Bhramastra Kaadan, The Bengali Detective, KGF 2, Jugg Jugg Jeeyo, RRR, BellBottom and many others.
Plus, even in the South-Asian subcontinent as a whole, Pakistani cinema has some exciting movies like The Legend Of Maula Jatt which one hopes will finally see the light of day.
But what is also a beacon of change is seeing our very own cherished actors like Dhanush and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, proceeding to do some fantastic work in the West.
Regardless of what the future may hold, at least people in the entertainment industry are working tirelessly and sincerely to present us with some compelling and engaging works of cinema.
