Aanand L Rai’s Atrangi Re secures OTT deal with Disney+ Hotstar for a Christmas Eve premiere in a move to “reach maximum people”, according to the director.
The movie is backed by Akshay Kumar’s Cape Of Good Films, Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and Rai’s Color Yellow Productions. It was earlier scheduled for a Valentines’ Day release this year but got postponed due to the pandemic.
With the trailer dropping today, Aanand claims that there is a lot more than what meets the eye within the first glimpse. He mentions:
“Atrangi means funnily weird. If a filmmaker shows patience in making a film, it’s his small expectation that people wait and understand the reason behind such a cast. We have a habit of judging people. I want people to watch the film for two hours and react to it thereafter.”
As a result, very little is known about the story. Sara Ali Khan’s character Rinku is caught between two worlds – her reality today and the one she lived years ago.
Amidst this though, we see an unwanted marriage between Khan and Dhanush. Then enters Kumar as a magician, who vows to change the dynamics of the story.
There are dialogues by the female lead which tells the male protagonist to be silent when getting teased by her as well as a forced wedding between them.
To what extent will these serious issues be glorified is something yet to be seen in the film itself, especially after Anand L Rai romanticised stalking in Raanjhanaa.
Oscar-winning AR Rahman is roped in as the composer.
Atrangi Re streams on Disney+ Hotstar from December 24.
